Bed bugs are one of the most stressful pest infestations a homeowner can face. Here is how to identify them, what professional treatment involves, and what to do right now if you think you have them.

How to Tell If You Have Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are small, flat, reddish-brown insects about the size of an apple seed. They feed on human blood, primarily at night, and hide in mattress seams, box springs, bed frames, and nearby furniture during the day. The most common signs of a bed bug infestation include small, itchy bites on your skin (often in a line or cluster), tiny blood stains on your sheets or pillowcase, dark fecal spots on your mattress or nearby surfaces, and a sweet, musty odor in the bedroom.

Where Bed Bugs Hide

Bed bugs are excellent hiders. Beyond the mattress and box spring, they can be found in headboards, nightstands, baseboards, electrical outlets, picture frames, and even inside electronics. In heavy infestations, they can spread throughout the entire room and into adjacent rooms.

How Bed Bugs Spread

Bed bugs do not jump or fly. They spread by hitchhiking on luggage, clothing, used furniture, and other items. Hotels, vacation rentals, and public transportation are common sources of bed bug exposure. Buying used furniture, especially mattresses and upholstered items, is a significant risk factor.

What Professional Bed Bug Treatment Involves

Professional bed bug treatment typically involves one of two approaches: heat treatment or chemical treatment. Heat treatment raises the temperature of the affected area to levels lethal to bed bugs (above 120°F) and is highly effective when performed correctly. Chemical treatment uses targeted pesticide applications to eliminate bed bugs and their eggs. Both approaches require thorough preparation by the homeowner before treatment begins.

What to Do Right Now

If you suspect a bed bug infestation, do not move items from the affected room to other parts of the house, as this can spread the infestation. Do not throw away your mattress without consulting a professional first. Call Dade Pest Solutions at 305-330-5565 for a professional inspection. Early detection and treatment significantly reduce the cost and disruption of bed bug elimination.
