Flea Prevention and Treatment for South Florida Homes with Pets

South Florida's warm climate means fleas are a year-round problem, not just a summer issue. Here is how to protect your pets and your home from flea infestations.

Why Fleas Are a Year-Round Problem in South Florida

In most of the United States, flea populations decline significantly during cold winter months. In South Florida, temperatures rarely drop low enough to kill flea eggs and larvae, which means flea season never truly ends. Homeowners with pets in Miami-Dade County need to maintain flea prevention year-round, not just during the summer months.

The Flea Life Cycle and Why It Matters

Understanding the flea life cycle is essential for effective control. Adult fleas (the ones you see on your pet) represent only about 5% of the total flea population in your home. The other 95% are eggs, larvae, and pupae hiding in carpets, upholstery, and yard debris. This is why treating only the pet is rarely sufficient to eliminate a flea infestation.

Preventing Fleas in Your Home

Year-round flea prevention on your pets is the single most important step. Consult your veterinarian for the most appropriate flea prevention product for your pet. Vacuum carpets, rugs, and upholstered furniture regularly and dispose of the vacuum bag immediately. Wash pet bedding weekly in hot water. Keep your yard mowed and remove leaf litter, which provides harborage for flea larvae.

Treating an Active Flea Infestation

If you already have a flea infestation, you need to treat the pet, the home interior, and the yard simultaneously. Treating only one of these three areas will not eliminate the infestation. Professional flea treatment at Dade Pest Solutions includes targeted interior treatment focusing on areas where pets rest and travel, yard treatment for outdoor flea populations, and follow-up service as needed. We recommend treating your pet with a veterinarian-approved product on the same day as the home treatment.
